Dual Shipping Methods

Since March 21, 2024, an important legislative change came into effect for online shops in Belgium. This change, enshrined in Article VI.45/2 of the Economic Law Code, requires online sellers to offer consumers at least two different delivery methods for their orders.

What does the law change entail?

The new legislation requires web shops and other distance sellers, such as mail order companies and television sellers, to offer a minimum of two delivery options. This can range from home delivery, delivery to neighbors, pickup points, parcel machines, to same-day express delivery. Webshops have the freedom to choose which delivery methods they offer and can charge different fees for each method. The goal is to give consumers more flexibility and choice in receiving their orders.

Why this obligation?

The law change was introduced to reduce the environmental impact of the exponential growth of e-commerce. The increase in vans for home deliveries has led to increased CO2 emissions and poorer air quality in urban areas. Providing consumers with more delivery options, such as pick-up points and parcel vending machines, can reduce the pressure on the environment. This contributes to a more sustainable future and helps cities maintain cleaner air. Moreover, offering multiple delivery options can improve logistics chain efficiency and increase customer satisfaction.

Impact on web shops

For many web shops, this change will have little practical impact, as many already offer multiple delivery options. However, it is important that all web shops are aware of this new obligation and adjust their delivery options accordingly to comply with the law.

Web shops that currently offer only one delivery option will have to review their logistics processes and may have to enter into new partnerships with delivery services or pickup points. This may incur initial costs, but in the long run it may lead to a broader customer base and higher customer satisfaction.

Consumer benefits

Consumers benefit from this change in the law by having more choice in how and when they receive their orders. This can be especially convenient for those with busy schedules or limited access to home deliveries. Collection points and parcel vending machines offer the flexibility to pick up orders at a time that is convenient for them, without depending on being present at home. This increases usability and can lead to a more positive shopping experience.

Conclusion

This change in the law is a step forward in making the e-commerce sector more sustainable. By offering consumers more choice in delivery methods, we can collectively contribute to a better environment. Webshops must embrace this change and adapt their delivery strategies to both comply with the law and better serve their customers. It is an opportunity for Web shops to improve their service and differentiate themselves in a competitive market.
